On this page we will describe in detail the types of the work that we perform and define some of the most commoon terms used in the concrete industry.
Flatwork can be defined as anything that is commonly used to walk or drive on. The most popular types of flat work are:
Flatwork is typically completed by first removing the existing conditions whether it be concrete, asphalt, or grass and loam. The sub-grade should be 4" to 6" of compacted processed gravel to provide a stable base with adequate drainage. Flatwork is then formed with lumber or specialty steel forms. Concrete is then poured inside the forms, leveled, and then textured when the concrete is dry enough. Concrete is poured typically 4" - 6" thick with wire mesh or fiber mesh. Steel wire mesh is a type of reinforcing that is added to concrete to help prevent cracking and heaving. Fiber mesh serves the same purpose only it is added directly to the concrete mix.

Concrete staircases are a durable and versatile alternative to wooden staircases. New staircases can be formed from scratch and existing concrete staircases can often be recast with little or no demolition required.
Foundations and retaining walls often contain two elements; footing and wall. The footing is typically one foot high by two feet wide and is place below the frost line. In most areas the bottom of the footing will be 42" below the final grade of the land. The foundation wall will then sit centered on the footing secured by either steel dowels or a keyway. Retaining wall and foundation wall heights will vary depending on the pre-existing or future conditions of the grade of the land.

Most all concrete work is finished with a variety of different options such as color, texture type, exposed aggregate or stamping. Go to the GALLERY page to see some examples of finishing types.
